11 February 2014, Lagos – Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) Monday threatened to mobilise members for a nationwide strike over casualisation and victimisation of workers by oil majors and multinationals operating in the industry.
The union decried the degree of impunity and non-conformity with best practices by the multi-nationals in their dealings with contract workers warning that if the nefarious activities were not checked, it will create an unhealthy atmosphere in the sector.
NUPENG President, Igwe Achese, who gave the notice of strike in a statement, alerted the federal government of a looming scarcity of petroleum products which if not urgently addressed will disrupt economic activities in the country.
