Port Harcourt — Many families in Awkuzu Street, Mile One Diobu, Port Harcourt have been displaced and rendered homeless following a gas fire explosion that gutted the area.
The fire incident which began late Tuesday morning, burned for hours before, before the arrival of operatives of the fire service.
An eyewitness, identified as Mrs. Anita the fire started from a room at Number 09 Awkuzu Street, when a woman mistakenly left her cooking gas cylinder on and went out.
The eyewitness explained that the gas cylinder which regulator was faulty exploded, and the fire spread to other apartments and buildings in the street.
She revealed that the incident happened so fast that the occupants of the affected building were not able to bring out tangible property from the building.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Rivers State Police Command, DSP Grace Iringe-Koko, said no life was lost during the incident.
Iringe-Koko also disclosed that investigation has commend ed to unravel the cause of the fire.
“Yes, there was a fire incident today in Mile I and investigation is ongoing to ascertain the root cause of the fire. No life was lost, the DPO of Mile I Police Division was on ground to forestall breakdown of laws during the incident,” the PPRO said.
