Port Harcourt — The Ijaw Youth Council, IYC Worldwide, has issued a strong warning against any attempt to impeach Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, declaring that such a move would provoke severe political and economic consequences for the country.
This is as the Supreme Court recently stopped the release of federal monthly allocations from the consolidated revenue funds to the Rivers State Government.
The apex court had also ordered the Martins Amaewhule-led faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly and other elected members of the House, loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to resume sitting.
In a statement signed by Rt. Hon. Gabriel Tomoni Allen, Speaker of the IYC Parliament Worldwide, the group vowed to resist any attempt to remove Fubara, describing those behind the impeachment plot as “greedy and insatiable political charlatans” bent on destabilizing the state.
“Governor Sim Fubara can never be impeached by any means or form in Rivers State. Few greedy fellows are determined to create unimaginable political and economic crises that will drag us back to the dark days of economic woes in the Niger Delta before the Amnesty Program.”
The IYC emphasized that Rivers State belongs to its people and not to a select group of political elites who have positioned themselves as untouchable power brokers.
“Those who think they can push Fubara out of office should also be ready to push the entire Ijaw Nation to the brink,” the statement warned.
Calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and ensure peace prevails, the IYC urged all political actors to avoid actions that could disrupt the economic stability of the region, including the oil and gas sector, which is critical to Nigeria’s economy.
“We stand with Governor Sim Fubara, come rain, come shine. The Ijaw Nation will not sit idly by while political imperialism is forced upon Rivers State.”
With tensions rising in the state, the warning from the IYC signals potential unrest in the Niger Delta region, should the Hon. Martins Amaewhule faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly begin any impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara.
