17 March 2014, News Wires – Japan’s Tohoku Electric Power signed a contract to buy liquefied natural gas from Petronas-operated Malaysia LNG 2 (MLNG).
Starting in 2016, supply from MLNG to Tohoku will last for 10 years, according to local media reports.
Japanese imports of LNG have sky-rocketed since the Fukushima nuclear disaster as the energy-starved markets searches for possible supply options.
Under the contract, Tohoku will buy 370,000 tonnes per year of LNG from April 2016.
The existing 20-year contract ends in March 2016. It had previously seen half a million tonnes per year being delivered to the Japanese utility.
The company recently signed a agreement to buy nearly 1 million tonnes per annum of LNG from Chevron’s Wheatstone project in Australia.
