12 October 2014, Nairobi – Residents in Baringo and Elgeyo Marakwet counties want their governors to resolve land, compensation and jobs disputes over oil exploration. Tullow Oil company has started exploration.

However, residents want it stopped until their demands are addressed. The residents’ leader Justine Kurui said they have written to governors Alex Tolgos (Elgeyo Marakwet) and Benjamin Cheboi (Baringo) with no response.

Kurui said residents want compensation for encroachment on private land. Representatives of the communities met in Kerio Valley on Tuesday. The residents want to be employed by Tullow.

In its statement, Tullow said it has discussed all issues raised with all players and that, “during the exploration, access to land would only be required on a temporary basis and would be undertaken in accordance with the law.”
