18 September 2014, Nairobi – Residents of Kerio Valley in Kenya’s Baringo county have called on the Tullow Oil Company to compensate them before beginning oil exploration in October.
They also want the company to provide adequate information on the exercise.
Women leader from Barwessa location Nancy Kiptoon said the community was not properly consulted before the Baringo government signed a memorandum of understanding with the company.
“We are surprised to hear that the county government sold community land without informing the owners,” she said.
Kiptoon was speaking at the Kenya School of Government in Kabarnet town.
She said Tullow Oil violated the law by valuing the land with the county government without residents’ input.
