13 August 2015, News Wires – Six people are confirmed as dead after a Bristow helicopter crashed near an airport in Lagos on Wednesday.
A further six people who were onboard the Sikorsky S-76C+ aircraft that crashed on approach to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos have, however, survived.
There were 10 passengers and two crew members on board helicopter that was returning from an offshore oil rig when it crashed at 3:30pm local time on Wednesday.
Bristow Helicopters confirmed on Thursday that two of the dead were the pilot, Captain Joseph Wyatt, and First Officer Peter Bello.
Wyatt was from Oklahoma, while Bello was a Nigerian.
The owner did not give the names or nationalities of the other deceased and survivors, nor say what company they worked for or what rig they were returning from.
“Bristow has mobilised the full resources of its response team and is working closely with authorities on the investigation, including at the accident site to recover the aircraft,” the company said.
“Medical treatment is being provided to those who are injured and trained coordinators have been assigned to the families of the crew members and passengers to support them with their every need and ensure that they receive the most current information and assistance.”
The helicopter company has set up a dedicated hotline for relatives and friends of those who were on board the aircraft.
