Port Harcourt — Nigeria’s Armed Forces have significantly curtailed crude oil theft and dismantled illegal refineries through enhanced naval patrols and air interdictions, according to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr. Mohammed Idris.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement held at the Defence Headquarters, the Minister praised the Service Chiefs for he described as “two years of strategic recalibration” that has yielded tangible gains in national security, particularly in protecting Nigeria’s vital oil infrastructure.
He said, “Improved naval patrols have drastically cut down crude oil theft and led to the destruction of illegal refineries. The scorecard is not only impressive, it is reassuring.”
The event, organized to mark the second anniversary of the appointment of the current Service Chiefs, brought together military leaders, media executives, and top government officials.
Idris, who chaired the session, delivered a message of commendation from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the military leadership.
“Our highways are more secure, Boko Haram and ISWAP have been degraded, and the armed forces have regained control of both physical territory and national confidence,” the Minister stated.
Highlighting the importance of ongoing collaboration, Idris called on the media to amplify the achievements of the military, saying, “Tell the story of progress. Balance criticism with context. That is the true calling of responsible journalism.”
He reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to backing the military with not just equipment, but also strategic policy support, intelligence tools, and improved welfare.
“You have restored hope, saved lives, defended our sovereignty, and above all, reminded us all of what it means to serve,” he told the Service Chiefs.
Other dignitaries present included the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, represented by Major General AT Jibrin (rtd); Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa; DGs of NAN, FRCN, and VON; the NIPR President, Dr Ike Neliaku; and senior representatives of the armed forces and media industry.
