26 July 2012, Sweetcrude, LAGOS – MOBIL Producing Nigeria, MPN, an ExxonMobil Affiliate in Nigeria, has voted over N20 million to bankroll this year’s edition of Science Teachers Association of Nigeria, STAN, National Science Quiz Competition slated for the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja between August 6 and 11.
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, and MPN have consistently sponsored the competition for 17 unbroken years. The competition, which has both primary and secondary schools categories, is held annually in conjunction with STAN to encourage and reward excellence in science-based subjects among students drawn from all the states of the federation.
Speaking on the sponsorship commitment of the company, the General Manager, Public and Government Affairs, Mobil Producing Nigeria, Mr. Paul Arinze, said that the NNPC/MPN JV believes in investing heavily in youths in order to prepare them for future challenges in the nation’s quest to achieve technological development.
Corporate citizen
He said: “As a responsible corporate citizen of this country, Mobil Producing Nigeria is delighted to announce again that we will sponsor this year’s edition of the annual STAN National Science Quiz competition. We have consistently over the last 17 years demonstrated, through this sponsorship, our commitment to the development of science education in Nigeria.
“Moreover, through this sponsorship, we have shown the organisation’s belief in laying a solid foundation for the country’s technological development through a consistent re-awakening of students’ interest in the study of science-based subjects.
“With a good grasp of science subjects, Nigerian students are better equipped and positioned to lead the technological revolution that will permeate every facet of the country. That’s the guiding philosophy driving MPN’s consistent partnership with STAN on this project.”
The Executive Secretary, STAN, Dr. Ben Akpan, who expressed the readiness of the association to host both the annual conference and the competition, noted that the support of MPN has been invaluable to the modest achievements recorded over the years by STAN.
