– Eyes gas supremacy in Nigeria’s energy transition

Abuja — Nembe Exploration and Production Company, Nembe E&P, has announced an ambitious strategy to scale its oil production to 200,000 barrels per day and gas output to 250 million standard cubic feet per day, mmscf/d, positioning itself as Nigeria’s leading indigenous gas-first energy producer.
The company, a subsidiary of the Aiteo Group and operator of OML 29, Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest onshore oil block, made the declaration at the ongoing Nigeria Oil & Gas, NOG Energy Week 2025 in Abuja, signaling a major shift in Nigeria’s upstream dynamics toward cleaner, more resilient energy development.
“Our development strategy is not just about scale, it’s about sustainability, sovereignty, and smart execution. We are building Africa’s next great energy company, decarbonized, de-risked, and indigenously led. Our targets are bold, but so is our belief in Nigeria’s future,” said Victor Okoronkwo, Group Managing Director of Nembe E&P.
Backed by remaining reserves of 1.7 billion barrels of oil and 2.9 trillion cubic feet of gas, Nembe E&P is implementing a cluster-based development plan across OML 29, which spans 990 square kilometers. The plan includes the drilling of 17 new wells, 25 workovers, and the commissioning of a new Central Processing Facility by Q3 2025 to remove bottlenecks in crude evacuation.
The company also operates the 97-kilometre Nembe Creek Trunk Line, NCTL, a strategic evacuation asset that transports produced fluids from Bayelsa State to the Bonny Terminal in the Eastern Niger Delta, providing midstream integration that gives Nembe E&P a significant logistical and commercial edge.
“We have a rare advantage,” Okoronkwo noted. “By owning and operating our own evacuation infrastructure, we can unlock stranded volumes, optimize offtake timelines, and drive value for all stakeholders.”
Emphasizing gas monetization as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s energy transition, Nembe E&P is also scaling up its use of Associated Gas Gathering compressors, flare-reduction technology, and LNG processing infrastructure. The company is moving decisively to become a major independent gas producer, with plans for domestic and export-ready gas infrastructure.
“As global capital tilts toward cleaner molecules, our gas-forward strategy mirrors the aspirations of Nigeria’s energy roadmap. Gas is not a bridge fuel for us, it is the foundation for a resilient and competitive energy future,” Okoronkwo said.
Nembe E&P also reaffirmed its commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance principles, announcing a full decarbonization roadmap aligned with Nigeria’s Net Zero 2060 commitments and the Upstream Petroleum Development Transition mandates.
“Our roadmap includes solar pilots, methane reduction audits, and an operational shift toward sustainable development. This is not an afterthought, ESG is core to how we build, grow, and lead.”
With a disciplined approach, integrated asset base, and clear national alignment, Nembe E&P’s strategy signals a new era of locally anchored growth in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, where performance, policy, and purpose align.
