Port Harcourt — The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has announced its commitment to accelerating renewable energy integration to drive the expansion of the national electricity grid.
Speaking at the just concluded Summit on Accelerating Scale-Up of Renewable and Distributed Energy Resources in Nigeria, NERC Vice Chairman, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, emphasised the need for increased renewable energy generation to meet the country’s growing electricity demands.
The NERC Vice Chairman spoke when he participated in the Stakeholders’ Panel Session discussion on identifying gaps and de-risking embedded generation and franchising to support the attainment of set targets.
With a target of generating a minimum of 2,000MW of electricity from renewables this year, Oseni said NERC was promoting Distributed Energy Resources and Embedded Generation to boost access to electricity for underserved and unserved communities.
He asserted that the Commission was engaging with stakeholders to increase the integration of renewable energy in the country’s energy mix and providing regulatory guidance to support the attainment of set targets.
Oseni also commended participants for their in-depth engagement, expressing optimism that it would significantly impact the renewable energy expansion drive.
“I want to thank you for your contributions which will help to build the policy and the regulatory framework to achieve our objective of having more renewable energy integrated into the Nigerian electricity system,” Oseni said.
