Port Harcourt — The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights of electricity consumers to reliable and efficient power supply from the electricity distribution companies, DisCos.
Speaking at a townhall meeting and complaints resolution forum in Kaduna, NERC Commissioner for Consumer Affairs, Aisha Mahmud, assured customers that the Commission remains unwavering in enforcing quality service delivery.
The event, organized in collaboration with Kaduna Electric, featured instant complaint resolution, with the DisCo’s customer care team addressing grievances under NERC’s supervision.
The forum also educated consumers on their rights and obligations while highlighting the Commission’s guidelines, such as the Customer Protection Regulations, which compel DisCos to prioritize consumer satisfaction.
Mahmud said:“NERC is committed to protecting consumer rights and ensuring quality service delivery,” she stated. “Customers have the right to efficient and reliable electricity supply, and we’ve implemented initiatives like customer enumeration and prepaid meter deployment to achieve this.
She further emphasized the importance of collaboration: “We must work together—NERC, the DisCos, and the consumers—to tackle issues affecting electricity services. It is through cooperation that we can achieve meaningful improvements.”
Highlighting consumer rights, she added, “Consumers have the right to receive accurate billing based on their actual consumption, a reliable power supply, and prompt resolution of complaints. It is our duty to ensure these rights are protected.”
The programme, which runs until Saturday, forms part of NERC’s ongoing efforts to promote transparency, accountability, and improved service delivery in Nigeria’s electricity sector.
