22 February 2015, Abuja – The Advocacy for Economic Integrity, a non-governmental organisation NGO,, has called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts at improving power supply as a vehicle for tackling the manufacturing sector’s challenges.
The Director-General of the organisation, Mr Abdullahi Aremu, made the call in Abuja.
Aremu said the main challenge facing the economy was power, adding that without electricity very little could be done to move the economy forward.
“If we want to generate enough power to carry the economy, we have to tackle corruption because corruption affects all aspects of our lives.
“Corruption has eaten deep into the fabric of our system. Our education, health and political systems are affected.
“After power, the next thing to face is corruption. If you can reduce corruption to the barest minimum, we will be on the right track,’’ Aremu said.
He said manufacturers were facing challenges of infrastructure, demand condition and competition with products imported from China and other Asian countries.
The director-general said these challenges could be tackled by putting in place proper reforms, particularly in the power sector.
Aremu also said there was the need to unlock the credit market to enable credit flow, adding that it is a development which would help the economy to regain its momentum.
