09 November 2014, Sokoto — The European Union, German and Sokoto State governments yesterday signed an agreement on rural electrification.
The agreement is part of a bilateral cooperation of the Nigerian Energy Support Programme, funded by the European Union and the German government, and implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation.
Head of Programme, Nigerian Energy Programme of the German Agency for International Cooperation ( GIZ), Mr. Daniel Werner, who signed on behalf of the EU and the German government, said it is a four-year project.
Speaking on behalf of the EU, Deputy Head of Delegation, Mr Richard Young, said Sokoto was selected as part of the five partner-states to benefit from the programme after a comprehensive and transparent selection process.
Under the agreement, Young said two villages would be provided electricity to promote investments as well as boost power supply and distribution.
He added that the agreement also include capacity building for technical staff of the state.
Secretary to the Sokoto State Government, Alhaji Sahabi Gada, who signed the agreement on behalf of the state government, noted that the gesture would complement the government’s efforts towards improving power supply.
