05 February 2014, Abuja – The Nigerian government is putting strategies in place to ensure the full implementation of Nuclear Power Programmes in Nigeria, Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has said.
Anyim stated this when a delegation of the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA)/International Expert Group on Nuclear Liability Mission paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.
The SGF, represented by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Mr Linus Awute, said the timing of their visit was quite auspicious as the process of developing the nation’s policy on the civil liability for nuclear damage was ongoing.
He noted that the visit would yield a catalytic effect in the implementation strategies being developed.
Leader of the delegation, Mrs Peri-Lynne Johnson, said the purpose of the visit was to brief the Government of Nigeria on the International Nuclear Liability regime.
She said IAEA, the United Nations nuclear watchdog, ensures that nuclear power programmes implementation by members states met international standards with strict compliance on safety, security and safeguards.
Johnson said that the IAEA established an international Expert Group on Nuclear liability in 2013 to explore and providing expert advice on general issues relating to nuclear liability and to further develop the IAEA nuclear regime.
Others, she said, are to promote global adherence to this regime and to assist member states in developing their internal legal framework relating to nuclear liability
