Port Harcourt — Nigeria’s march toward a cleaner and more diversified energy future received a major boost as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, announced a record daily gas production of about 7 billion standard cubic feet, BCF, the highest in the nation’s history.
Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, Mr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, disclosed this during a briefing with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, where he presented updates on the company’s production performance and ongoing investment drive.
Ojulari said the gas milestone underscores Nigeria’s strategic shift from crude dependency to a gas-driven economy that supports power generation, industrialisation, and cleaner energy solutions.
“This is not just a number, it’s a statement,” Ojulari declared.
“Our record gas output represents the fuel for Nigeria’s economic diversification and a critical foundation for achieving sustainable energy access.”
He explained that the achievement aligns with the Federal Government’s ‘Decade of Gas’ agenda, which seeks to harness Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves for domestic utilisation and export competitiveness.
According to Ojulari, NNPCL’s focus on gas infrastructure, including ongoing expansions in pipeline networks and LNG capacity, is central to this ambition.
“We are deliberately investing in gas as both a transition and a transformational fuel. From the ANOH Gas Plant to NLNG Train 7, we are building assets that will power homes, industries, and the wider African market,” he said.
He also reaffirmed NNPCL’s commitment to driving an inclusive energy transition that balances environmental responsibility with developmental imperatives.
“Nigeria’s gas journey is about energy justice, providing reliable, affordable energy to our people while meeting global sustainability goals,” Ojulari added.
Energy experts say the record gas output could bolster electricity generation, industrial feedstock supply, and LNG exports, potentially positioning Nigeria as a top-five global LNG supplier by 2030.
Ojulari concluded by assuring that NNPCL will maintain its momentum through innovation, partnership, and policy alignment with the Federal Government’s broader economic reform agenda.
