06 February 2015, Kano — The Kano State government has received two power generating turbines for the N14 billion Independent Power Projects (IPP) initiated by Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Kwankwaso initiated the two power projects in Tiga and Challawa dams to address the problem of power supply in the state.
A statement by the governor’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Halilu Ibrahim Dantiye, said with the delivery, the power project would soon take off.
Kwankwaso, while giving assurance on the project, said a total of 12 containers of electrical materials have so far been received.
He said four of the 12 containers were displayed to people at the state Government House to enable those who cannot go to the project sites have a glance at the multi-billion naira equipment.
“The two projects were approved at the sum of N14.2 billion, in addition to N2 billion for taking electricity to the city,” he said.
He said that Tiga IPP is capable of generating 10 megawatts, and that five megawatts would be used to power Tamburawa and Challawa water works.
He added that the remaining five megawatts to be produced by the IPP would be used to power street lights at night, while during the day, it would be sold to industries in order to generate revenue and employment.
He further said that 25 megawatts for Challawa Gorge IPP would solely be for commercial purposes.
