11 August 2017, Sweetcrude, Lagos — The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) has called urged the public to ignore stories doing the rounds that it is demanding money before installing pre-paid meters to its customers at Rumuomasi.
According to a statement released on Thursday and signed by its Manager, Corporate Communications, John Onyi, those “masquerading” as meter installers for the company thereby exploiting the public, are “unidentified persons”.
The company said PHED has not instructed anybody either directly or indirectly, to act on its behalf with the purpose of collecting any money before smart meters are installed.
PHED said in the last meeting held with the people and chiefs of the Rumuomasi kingdom, it was made clear that “meters are free”.
“In the light of this, if anybody comes to you to demand gratification or his action suggests that, please call the PHED anti-corruption hotline, 09085555055 or accost the person and hand him over to the police. And if your abode is skipped without being metered, also call the PHED attention to it,” it said
