Dublin, Ireland — Nigeria’s total gas output for the month of May 2025 grew by 4.08 per cent to 186.302 billion standard cubic feet (SCF) of gas, compared with 179 billion SCF (BSCF) of gas produced in the country in April 2025, data from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) have revealed.

The NNPCL, in its gas production report for May 2025, stated that the 186.302 BSCF of gas produced in the month under review translated to average daily output of 6.010 billion SCF of gas, as against average daily output of 5.967 billion SCF of gas in the preceding month.

Giving a breakdown of gas produced in the month under review, the NNPCL noted that Associated Gas (AG) accounted for 61.48 per cent of total gas produced in the month, with 114.546 billion SCF of gas; while Non-Associated Gas (NAG) accounted for 38.52 per cent of total gas output, with 71.757 billion SCF of gas.

The national oil gas company further stated that out of the total gas produced in the month under review, 176.376 billion SCF, representing 94.67 per cent of the total, was utilised, while 9.926 billion SCF of gas, representing 5.33 per cent of the total was flared in the month under review.

Specifically, the NNPCL noted that the volume of gas flared in the month under review was 6.0 per cent lower than the 10.56 billion SCF of gas flared in April 2025.

Giving a breakdown of gas utilised in the month of May 2025, the NNPCL reported that 9.706 billion SCF of gas, representing 5.21 per cent of total gas produced in the month, was used as fuel gas; while 72.71 billion SCF of gas, representing 39.03 per cent, was utilised by the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG).

Escravos Gas-to-Liquid (EGTL) utilised 8.726 billion SCF of gas, accounting for 4.68 per cent of total gas output; Natural Gas Liquids/Liquefied Petroleum Gas (NGL/LPG) used up 2.588 billion SCF of gas, representing 1.39 per cent of total gas produced in the month.

Furthermore, 27.568 billion SCF of gas, representing 14.8 per cent of total gas output, was utilised domestically by the Nigerian Gas Company (NGC), among others; while 29.56 per cent of total gas produced in the month (55.079 billion SCF), was reinjected and used as gas lift make-up.

The NNPCL reported that Renaissance Africa Energy, which recently acquired the assets of Shell Nigeria, recorded the highest gas output in the month under review, with 51.02 billion SCF of gas; followed by Seplat Energy Producing Nigeria Unlimited (SEPNU), Chevron Nigeria and TotalEnergies, with gas output of 30.08 billion SCF, 23.759 billion SCF and 17.413 billion SCF, respectively.

In addition, Star Deep Water produced 13.402 billion SCF of gas from its Agbami Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel in the month under review; while Total Upstream produced 13.339 billion SCF of gas from its Akpo FPSO; while Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited (EEPNL) recorded gas output of 9.757 billion SCF from its Erha FPSO.

However, the NNPCL noted that the NNPCL Exploration and Production Limited (NEPL) and Seplat Joint Venture, and the NEPL and Chevron Nigeria Joint Venture were the worst offenders in terms of gas flaring, as they each flared 100 per cent of their gas total output, respectively.

It added that Enageed Resources flared 95.97 per cent of its106 million SCF of gas produced from Oil Mining Lease (OML) 148; while NEPL flared 94 per cent of its 286 million SCF of gas output from its Oil Mining Leases 86/88.
