22 June 2018, Sweetcrude, Port Harcourt — The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, has slammed a fine of N1 million on a Greek shipping firm, Unibros Shipping Corp, for obstructing the inspection of its ship with the name, MT Zonda.
NIMASA’s Chief District Surveyor, Onne, Engr. James Eyo, in a letter titled ‘Fine for Obstruction’, which was addressed to the Managing Director of the firm, said the obstruction contravenes the provision of NIMASA Act 2007.
Eyo, in the letter, stated that the sum of N1 million has been calculated as fine against the company, which, according to the letter, should be paid at any commercial bank to the agency.
The letter read in parts, “Master’s refusal to endorse report of Port State Control inspection, thereby obstructing PSC officers from carrying out their legitimate duties as per provision of NIMASA Act 2007 part XIII section 58.
“Total of one million naira only (N1,000,000.00) has been calculated and payment of same to be made to Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency Account number 0230511561014 at any commercial bank.”
