Lagos — The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, has concluded plans to take over security at the Secured Anchorage Area, SAA at Lagos anchorage, an area that was once operated by the Ocean Marine Solution Limited, OMSL.
Recall that the Federal Government about three weeks ago counselled the operation of OMSL.
It was gathered that NIMASA is to move one of the assets of the deep Blue equipment ‘DB Lagos and DB Abuja to the anchorage to secure the area.
DB Lagos and DB Abuja two Multi-purpose security surveillance vessels the government acquired through the Integrated National security and waterways protection infrastructure project.
NIMASA, it was gathered will share with stakeholders the mode of operation, reporting details for vessels entering the SAA and if charges will be applicable to sustain the project.
Speaking on the development, a formers Director of Shipping, Captain Waredi Enisour said that he heard about NIMASA’s move to take over the SAA, adding that it is a good development.
He warned against collection of fees from vessels calling at the SAA adding that the purpose of taking over the place will be defeated if monies are charged.
The former Director said if the takeover of the area by NIMASA is about charges, then it is illegal.
He said: “ The whole idea is that ships will come there for free, I do not think anybody is going to pay for going to the SAA. If it is about charges, then it is illegal.
“I have not heard anything about charges because government itself cannot, after levying shipping and then come and levy them again for security, then that is not proper.
“The reason for NIMASA’s takeover is for them not to create a vacuum.
