Port Harcourt — As part of its corporate social responsibility, the Nigeria LNG Limited, NLNG, has sponsored the 11th edition of the Rotary Club of Trans Amadi Spelling Bee Competition for secondary schools in Rivers State.
Speaking at the grand finale of the competition in Port Harcourt, the Head of Community Engagement at NLNG, Sir Ifeanyi Umeh, said the company remained committed to building a better Nigeria through education, health, economic empowerment and infrastructural development.
Umeh also disclosed that the company was proud to be associated with the Rotary Club as the headline sponsor of the 2022 Rotary Club of Trans Amadi Spelling Bee Competition.
“We (NLNG) always remain committed to building a better Nigeria. Our four corporate social responsibility pillars are education, health, economic empowerment and infrastructural development.
“In education we have given scholarships to over 400 indigenes of Rivers State in the post-primary school category, over 2,000 Nigerians have benefited from our undergraduates scholarships and many more in the post graduate scholarship in the United Kingdom.
“NLNG is also supporting the Rivers State Government in renovating schools in the state. We have renovated four schools in phase one and we intend to renovate another six schools in the second phase.”
Earlier, the Rotary Club of Trans Amadi urged the Nigeria LNG Limited to take up full sponsorship of the Club’s spelling bee competition for primary and secondary schools in Rivers State.
President of the Club, Rotarian Chinwe Ekong Asanga, said the competition which is the signature project of the Rotary Club of Trans Amadi, had 693 students from 261 secondary schools in Rivers State, while only 50 students from 36 schools made it to the finals.
Asanga said the competition was imperative in order to provide adequate opportunities for fair competition for rural schools and their peers in urban and private schools.
She also expressed optimism that children will pay attention to reading as a result of the competition saying “Among many other reasons, we hope to Improve poor spelling competence even at the point of graduating from secondary school.
“We hope to provide adequate opportunities to develop healthy competitive spirit in a
competition that has no room for cheating, violence, or rancour. We also hope To provide adequate opportunities for fair competition for rural schools and their peers in urban and private schools.”
At the end of the competition, Aladumo International High School Port Harcourt emerged the winner, while Our Lady of Fatimah College Creek Road, came second, after four hours of keenly competitive spelling completion.
The winner and Queen Bee, Miss Ayeba-Ekimiebi Janice Josiah of Aladumo International High School Port Harcourt, commended Rotary Club of Trans Amadi and Nigeria LNG Limited for the competition.
Miss Josiah, a 16 year-old SS3 student, who dedicated her victory to God, said she has had firm belief that she would one day win this kind of competition before leaving secondary school.
