Port Harcourt — The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC, has expressed sorrow and grief following the death of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Taoreed Lagbaja, citing his role in enhancing crude oil production in the country.

This is as the Presidency on Wednesday announced the demise of Lieutenant-General Taoreed Lagbaja, who reportedly passed away at 56, on 5th November 2024 in Lagos after a brief illness, leaving behind a legacy of service and sacrifice for the country.

Reacting to his demise, the nation’s oil company acknowledged the late Army Chief’s instrumental role in the fight against pipeline vandalism and oil theft, highlighting his significant contribution to safeguarding Nigeria’s critical oil infrastructure.

Chief Corporate Communications Officer, NNPC Ltd, Olufemi Soneye, in a statement conveyed its deepest condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the Nigerian Army, describing Lt. Gen. Lagbaja as a brilliant officer and a true gentleman who served the nation with unparalleled dedication and distinction.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a great military leader whose commitment to national security and economic prosperity was unwavering. His passing is a monumental loss not only to the Nigerian Army but to the entire nation, particularly in the fight to protect our economic interests.”

NNPC Ltd. particularly lauded the late Chief of Army Staff’s tireless efforts in combatting oil theft and pipeline vandalism, which according to the company, have had a severe economic impact on Nigeria.

The company highlighted that Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s leadership played a pivotal role in securing critical oil and gas infrastructure from criminal activities that have cost the nation billions of dollars in lost revenue.

“His strategic coordination between military forces and security agencies was essential in the ongoing battle against pipeline vandalism and oil theft. His commitment to ensuring the protection of the nation’s energy resources was crucial in enabling the oil and gas sector to continue contributing to Nigeria’s economic development.”

NNPC Limited also emphasized that Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s support for the company’s security initiatives helped bolster national efforts to curb the illegal activities that have long plagued the oil sector.

“His proactive stance and decisive leadership were key in making strides toward stabilizing the oil supply and protecting vital national assets from destruction.”

As part of the statement, the company offered prayers to the immediate and extended families of the late army chief, wishing them strength and fortitude during the difficult time.

“We pray that God grants his family the courage to bear this irreparable loss and that He grants his soul eternal peace in His Bosom,” the statement read.
