19 January 2016, Lagos – Defending champions, NNPC sent a warning signal to group rivals of their resolve to hold onto the coveted trophy in the football event of the Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Games after they defeated Team PTI 2-0 in the opening match of this year’s edition.
The match which was played at the Legacy Pitch, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos yesterday saw the oil giants score in each half of the thrilling encounter, watched by a handful of supporters of both teams.
In the second match of the day, Chevron spanked ten-man, but hard fighting ExxonMobil team by a lone goal. The goal scored by Uche in the 65th minute separated the two teams.
The encounter which was evenly matched from start, saw Chevron’s number 16, Sunday Akpan receive marching orders from the centre referee after a second booking in the 30th minute. Total overwhelmed Shell 3-2 in the last match of the day.
Today’ fixtures, PTI will attempt to redeem their chances in the tournament as they take on NCDMB in the first match of the day. The match kicks off 8.30 am at the Legacy Pitch.
ExxonMobil will try to relaunch their strong bid for the title as they face NLNG in the second match of the day, while Shell and Agip will confront each other in a battle for the leadership of Group C.
