03January 2014, Asaba— A bill for a law to punish those responsible for oil spillage, which is before the National Assembly, is a welcome development and would serve as deterrent, Director-General of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA, Mr. Peter Idabor, has said.
Speaking with reporters in Issele-Azagba, Delta State, Idabor said the law is to criminalise willful cause of oil spillage.
According to him, “the law would come into being via the amendment to the NOSDRA Enabling ACT of 2006 which brought the Agency into being, but failed to provide for punishment for oil spillage.
“The amendment, which had passed the first and second readings in both chambers of the National Assembly, is being harmonised at the committee of both chambers and would, once passed into law, provide for effective punishment for oil spill convicts and thus serve as a deterrent to others.”
