30 October 2018, Sweetcrude, Lagos — TheManaging Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, Ms. Hadiza Bala Usman has said that the what informed the agency’s decision to get the International Standard Organzation, ISO Certification, is to improve its efficiency and reduce the cost of cargo clearance.
Speaking exclusive with Vanguard Maritime Report at the ongoing ISO certification training programme for management staff of the agency in Lagos, Usman said that management has decided to improve its harbor operations since that is the core department of the authority.
Usman explained the training was to prepare management staff toward the acquisition of the ISO certification adding that the agency was also Occupation of Safety and Health, OSH THE Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, is currently fast-tracking its moves towards its International Standard Organization, ISO certification as it has engaged an international consultancy firm Renner and Renner Consulting to assist towards this objective.
“We have commenced the process for ISO certification for the Nigerian Ports Authority and we are currently embarking on a workshop and the workshop is to prepare the management for what is expected of us in order for us to have the required 9001 Certification.
“In addition, we are also doing the OHSAS 18001 certification, this the Occupation Health, Safety Assessment Certification.
“Yes indeed Harbours is the core of NPA and historically, we have not given it the desired attention, with this understanding of its importance, we now know the need of this certification, this certification will strengthen the Harbours department and bring them to the forefront of our operations.
“The same way we are looking at the review of the concession agreement, we also looking at how we strengthen and give our Harbours department the capacity required and also and the procedures of their activities being streamlined to meet up to international standards.
The whole will impact on our operational efficiency, it will improve our revenue profile and we believe that this certification is a game changer for us at NPA
Similarly, the Country Director of Renner and Renner, the Consulting firm engaged by NPA to prepare the agency for the certification process, Ibutamuno Iyama, said the project of getting NPA achieving its drive to get the ISO certification solely depends on the authority adding that the firm will everything that needs to be done to get the agency certified but noted that the agency must adhere strictly to the rules and regulations guiding the process..
Iyama also said that from their preliminary investigation harbours department of the NPA is the important part of the NPA but it’s the least department that gets quality attention.
She explained that at the end of the exercise, the certification will change the way businesses are carried out in the nation’s ports for good.
