11 November 2015, News Wires – One person has reportedly died in a fire at a Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering yard in South Korea, the second deadly blaze to hit the struggling shipyard in less than three months.
The fire broke out on a newbuild liquefied petroleum gas carrier under construction at the Okpo shipyard in Geoje, South Korea, according to local reports cited by Upstream’s sister publication TradeWinds.
South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported one worker died and seven others were injured.
The fire was extinguished after an hour, reports said.
When the fire started, the victims were in a tank with about 130 people, Yonhap reported. The man reportedly died as a result of fume inhalation.
The other injured victims were taken to hospital. One is said to be in critical condition.
Authorities said the fire was likely sparked by a welding torch.
The fire follows a blaze at Daewoo’s yard in August on a similar vessel. That incidentkilled two men.
Daewoo is undergoing state-backed restructuring as it tries to stay afloat amid massive losses in a market dragged down by low oil and gas prices.
