23 August 2015, News Wires – Statoil’s Polarled pipeline, which will take gas from the Norwegian Sea to European markets, has reached a milestone by crossing the Arctic Circle.
The 482-kilometre pipeline, which will initially hook up to the Aasta Hansteen field, on Friday made it over a point 66 degrees and 33 minutes north of the equator, Statoil said.
This makes it the first pipeline to take Norwegian gas infrastructure across the Arctic Circle, the state-controlled player said.
The 32-inch-diametre pipeline is being laid by the giant Allseas-owned pipelaying vessel Solitair, with around 4 kilometres laid every day. Allseas began laying operations in late March.
The pipeline will take gas from Aasta Hansteen to Nyhamna on Norway’s west coast beginning in 2017. Originally set for completion in August, the pipeline should now reach the gas field in September, Statoil said.
Although initial gas will only come from Aasta Hansteen, six connection points have been installed to cater for hook-ups to other fields.
