25 July 2014, Lagos – Following heavy traffic on the Ijora-Apapa road, and despite the heavy presence of military personnel to clear the traffic for the visiting Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, to Apapa Port, the convoy of the minister drove against traffic en-route Apapa port. on Thursday.
Nebo, in company with the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Mr. Godknows Igali; the Chief Executive Officer, Transmission Company of Nigeria, Mr. Mack Kast, and some journalists, was on a scheduled visit to supervise the release of 248 abandoned containers at Apapa Port, Lagos, by the management of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria since 2003.
The Minister’s convoy faced the oncoming traffic from Ijora Bridge, opposite Lagos State Water Corporation building situated near Ijora Olopa bus stop.
The convoy drove through to Wharf roundabout against the traffic to the Zonal Headquarters of the Nigerian Customs Service, where the Zonal Coordinator, Victor Gbemudu, received Nebo to discuss the terms of the handing over of the containers.
The Apapa route has witnessed chaotic traffic in recent time and the stakeholders, including the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, had called on the Federal Government to address the problem.
Several officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority saw the minister’s convoy but were helpless in addressing addressing the situation.
According to Lagos State Traffic Law, it is a punishable offence to use siren indiscriminately and drive against traffic within the Lagos metropolis.
