Port Harcourt — In a strategic move to harness the economic potential of skills-based education, the Rivers State Government has announced plans to conduct a comprehensive appraisal of the underutilized Port Harcourt Technical and Vocational Centre, with the aim of identifying and eliminating barriers to its optimal performance.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by the state government to combat youth unemployment, bridge the skills gap, and drive inclusive economic development.
The commitment was made by the Rivers State Administrator, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, following an inspection tour of major state infrastructure, including the ongoing Rivers State House of Assembly Complex, the Port Harcourt Technical and Vocational Centre in Old GRA, and the Dr. Obi Wali International Conference Centre in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
Ibas noted that the establishment of the vocational centre was rooted in a strong belief in the transformative power of skills-based education and a commitment to social impact, stressing that allowing such a facility to remain idle was not an option.
“The Port Harcourt Technical and Vocational Centre, like the Dr. Obi Wali International Centre, is significantly underutilized. We must take decisive steps to ensure these facilities serve their intended purposes.”
He further linked the development of these projects to employment generation and economic revitalization.
“I have previously visited this site and received updates from various departments. Today, I inspected the progress made on this facility, as well as others. These structures were established to bolster the socio-economic activities of the state. If we optimize their use, we can engage more young people productively and enhance their skills,” he said.
The move signals a shift toward reactivating state assets to support industrial growth, workforce readiness, and sustainable livelihoods. It also aligns with the state’s broader development agenda focused on youth empowerment, economic diversification, and infrastructure optimization.
The Rivers State Government reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all public assets, particularly those designed for human capital development, are aligned with current economic realities and community needs.
