Lagos — The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, GEAPP, supported by Jeff Bezos and the Rockefeller Foundation, is launching a solar mini-grid initiative in Nigeria to address the country’s electricity crisis.
Established in 2021 with the Ikea Foundation, GEAPP has completed its first mini-grid and is constructing two more, with funding for a fourth secured. With about 86 million Nigerians lacking electricity, GEAPP’s initiative aims to provide reliable power to underserved communities.
The Demand Aggregation for Renewable Technology, DART, programme is central to this effort, allowing developers to lower solar equipment costs and access a $25 million financing facility.
Nigeria has significant solar potential, with an estimated capacity of 427,000 megawatts. Additionally, the Rural Electrification Agency, REA, has announced a new project funded by the World Bank to provide electricity to 17.5 million Nigerians.
GEAPP’s efforts signify a critical step toward enhancing energy access and combating energy poverty in the country.
