05 March 2014, Dar es Salaam – Motorists using gasoline in Tanzania will have to pay more this month following the price hike by 1.95 per cent per litre while gas oil engine and kerosine users will have a price relief of 3.5 per cent and 0.9 per cent for one litre respectively.
The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) cap prices published on Tuesday shows that petroleum price has increased by 42/- while diesel and kerosine declined by 74/- respectively, compared to the previous month.
The changes, according to the regulator, are attributed to price movement of petroleum products in the world oil market as well as the depreciation of the shilling against the US dollar. Despite price increment of gasoline, motorists in the Dar es Salaam region will pay less compared to others in other parts of the country.
For example, motorists in Dar es Salaam Region using gasoline engines will pay 2,187/- per litre compared to 2,430/- per litre in Lugufu, Uvinza District in Kigoma Region.
Price disparities of petroleum products have far reaching impacts on the cost of living of people residing in the most remote regions.
The prices of some goods and services will definitely go up, forcing people to pay more. Similarly, city residents using gas oil engine will benefit from price cut compared to those in the far most regions.
In Dar es Salaam, for example, motorists will pay 2,040/- per litre of diesel and 2,051/- per litre of kerosine compared to 2,283/- of diesel and 2,294/- of kerosine, respectively in Lugufu, Uvinza District in Kigoma Region.
Other parts of the country whose residents will have to dig deeper into their pockets include Kayanga in Karagwe District where a litre of petrol is 2,418/-, 2271/- for diesel and 2,282/- for kerosine. In Ruberwa in Kyerwa District, Kagera Region, retail petrol price is 2,424/-, diesel 2,277/- and kerosine 2,288/-.
