16 February 2018, Sweetcrude, Abuja – The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said it has terminated four power transmission contracts which it said were delayed because the contractors lacked the capacity, and has engaged its engineers to complete them.
The Managing Director of TCN, Alhaji Usman Gur Mohammed, disclosed this at the 24th monthly power sector meeting hosted by the company in Abuja shortly after commissioning a 100MVA transformer at Katampe substation in Abuja.
He explained that the terminated projects were the Walalanbe and Danbatta transmission substation in Kano State and the GIT and Federal LLiod contracts under the Nigeria Electricity and Gas Improvement Programme (NEGIP).
Mohammed said, “TCN engineers will complete all projects abandoned as well as those that the contractors portrayed lack of capacity. We have terminated the Walalanbe and Danbatta 132/33KV substation projects in Kano State and handed over the implementation to Kaduna transmission region.
“The GIT and federal LLiod contracts under NEGIP financed by the World Bank have been handed over to Port Harcourt and Abuja transmission regions respectively,” he explained.
The Head of Projects, MBH Power, Mr. Rakesh Mahapatra, said it was installing seven transformers under NEGIP and that four had been commissioned.
He said, “We have a 100MVA transformer right here in Katampe which has successfully increased the capacity of this substation.
“Also, we have installed another 100MVA transformer in Apo. Furthermore, it might interest you to know that under this same project, we are installing seven more transformers, out of which four have been commissioned,” Mahapatra said.
Mr. Mohammed commended MBH Power for meeting the specified timeline. “Messrs MBH Power did a marvelous job; they adhered to TCN new concept of speedy project delivery.
“They complied with our delivery schedule just as they did for Keffi and Apo substations,” the TCN boss noted.
