canada train11 July 2014, News Wires – A train derailment in Bangladesh has seen crude spill into a canal at Sitakunda in Chittagong.

Local newspaper The Daily Star reported that six furnace oil-laden tankers derailed on Wednesday, resulting in more than 53,000 litres of crude being leaked from three of the tankers, most of which it said spilled into the canal.

The derailment was caused when the train’s driver violated the signal and tried to enter Faujdarhat railway station.

The Daily Star has reported that the spill has already been seen to be having an effect on fish in the canal.

Asked whether oil from the spill could reach the sea via the canal, The Daily Start quoted chairman of 10 Chhalimpur union, Salahuddin Aziz, as saying there was a possibility of the crude mixing with the sea water.

“During the high tide sea water floods the canal and then draws back,” he said.
