18 November 2013, News Wires – The number of rigs drilling for oil and gas in the US rose by eight this week for a total of 1762, according to data from Houston-based services giant Baker Hughes.
Oil-directed rigs rose by two for a total of 1385 and gas rigs also rose, by five, to total 370.
The Eagle Ford shale play in South Texas had the biggest swing, losing three for a total of 223.
The Permian basin gained one for a total of 470. Texas as a state lost nine rigs for a total of 825, the biggest swing of any state.
The Williston basin, home of the Bakken shale, gained two rigs to total 177. North Dakota as a state gained two for a total of 165.
In the Appalachian basin, the Marcellus shale was up two rigs for a total of 87. The Utica shale was flat on 36.
Oklahoma and Louisina were the biggest gainers among states, adding four and three rigs for totals of 176 and 109, respectively.
The Haynesville shale was down one rig and the Fayetteville shale was flat on nine, however.
The Granite Wash and Mississippian plays each gained a rig for respective totals of 61 and 76. The DJ-Niobrara basin lost a rig for 50.
