02 June 2013 – The number of rigs drilling for oil and gas in the US rose by nine this week for a total of 1771, according to data from Houston-based services giant Baker Hughes.
Almost all those gains came from oil-directed rigs, which rose by eight for a total of 1410. Gas-directed rigs were flat on 354. Rigs deemed “miscellaneous” were up by one for a total of seven
Texas saw the biggest jump among states, adding three rigs for a total of 843. Rigs drilling in the Eagle Ford of South Texas were up one on 309. Rigs drilling in the Permian basin in West Texas were flat on 396.
Louisiana was flat on 107. Mississippi was down one on 11. Arkansas lost one for 14.
New Mexico was up one on 76.
Oklahoma was up two for 188. Kansas was flat on 26.
Colorado was up two for 59. Wyoming gained one for 45. Utah lost one for 33 after gaining five the previous week. Nevada was flat on three.
North Dakota was up two for 176. Montana was flat on nine. Two rigs were running in South Dakota, the same as last week.
Illinois lost a rig for four after steadily increasing its rig count throughout May to reach a peak of five last week.
Pennsylvania was flat on 58 and West Virginia was flat on 23. Ohio was flat on 32.
California was flat on 41 and Alaska gained one for seven.
