18 April 2014, News Wires – The number of rigs exploring for oil and gas in the US stayed flat this week at 1831 ahead of the Easter holiday, the latest data from the Houston-based service firm Baker Hughes said.
The count of oil units active was down by seven to 1510, still up 139 units from a year ago.
The tally of gas rigs was up by six to 116, off 63 from the year-ago week.
The Gulf of Mexico count was down by one over the week to 51, but up four from a year ago.
By state, Oklahoma saw the biggest losses, its count dropping by nine for a total of 187. Virginia shed three for a tally of 23.
Pensyvlania added five rigs for 59 units. Louisiana and Ohio tacked on two each for totals of 110 and 36 respectively.
Oklahoma’s Cana Woodford basin saw the greatest falloff, losing nine rigs for a count of 22. The count in the Ardmore Woodford area was also down, shedding one for a total of eight.
The Permian basin count was up by four to 540, while the Haynesville and Mississippian plays each added three for a totals of 45 and 74.
The Marcellus and Utica plays each added two rigs for totals of 81 and 37 respectively.
