08 May 2018, Sweetcrude, Lagos – The Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, KEDC, says the spate of vandalism on its installations has taken a deadly dimension as vandals have hacked to death a security man for daring to confront and prevent them from making away with cables from a transformer.
The incident, which took place in Sabon Tasha (Boro 1 Transformer) is the fifth recorded case in three weeks, causing untold hardship on the affected communities and costing Kaduna Electric over N32 million in losses within Kaduna metropolis alone from 2017 till date.
Only last week 15 meters of 150 mmsq was vandalised in Wusasa Zaria. There was also the case of a vandal who recently bagged a 5-year jail term in Soba Zaria.
In a statement, the Head Corporate Communications of KEDC, Mallam Abudulazeez Abdullahi, lamented the continuous destruction of the company’s equipment, describing it as worrisome and scary.
He therefore called on the general public to be part of the fight against the saboteurs who are not only putting the communities in darkness but have resorted to killing of the innocent to perpetuate their nefarious acts.
“The job of securing our electrical installation is not the responsibility of the company alone as some of our installations span millions of kilometres, openly installed overhead cables passing across the communities they serve.
For the umpteenth time, we are calling for more inclusive policing of these installations from members of the community, traditional rulers, vigilante groups and security agencies to enable Kaduna Electric make good its promise of providing steady supply of electricity,” he said in the statement.
