27 October 2017, Sweetcrude, Port Harcourt – The Nigeria LNG Limited, NLNG, has announced its reduction of gas flaring in the country from 70 to 20 percent since its inception.
The company also disclosed that it has devoted the sum of N3 billion, which would go on annually for 25 years, for the development of its primary host community, Bonny island, into a mini Dubai.
NLNG General Manager, External Relations, Dr. Kudo Eresia-Eke, made these known at the fifth award presentation ceremony of NLNG post-graduate scholarship held in Port Harcourt.
Eresia-Eke explained that said the company was singularly responsible for taking Nigeria away from the chart of countries with high rate of gas flaring.
He expressed optimism that the company’s Train-Seven would bring gas flaring in the country to the barest minimum, when it comes on stream.
According to him, “When we started operations in Nigeria at about 1999, Nigeria was about one of the worst culprit in terms of gas flaring.
“So one of the main reasons the federal government felt compelled to establish this company along with its partners and shareholders was so that the company could help reduce gas flaring in Nigeria.
“So what NLNG does in addition to taking natural gas, is also to buy gas that ordinarily should have been flared.
“Today we have reduced so much flare in the country, and hopefully when our Train-Seven comes on stream, then we will buy more gas and reduce gas flaring in Nigeria to a single digit and possibly zero.”
The NLNG General Manager also disclosed that the company was committed to developed its primary host community, Bonny Island, into a mini Dubai.
To this end, he said the company has devoted the sum of N3 billion which would continue annually for the next 25years, in order to achieve its dream for Bonny island.
He also announced that the company has a total of 120 host communities, majority of them he said were pipeline communities which hosts its gas transmission system.
“As our primary host community, we have devoted N3 billion annually contribution for the development of Bonny island into a mini Dubai and that contribution will go on for 25years.
“We have also committed a total of N60 billion for the construction of the Bonny-Bodo road, the biggest corporate social responsibility project in the world..”
