Port Harcourt — Over 120 patients, including nursing mothers, children and pregnant women, have benefited from a health intervention programme organised by the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Eco, at the Model Primary Healthcare Centre, Igwuruta, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
This is as the Club also donated medical supplies, including insecticide-treated mosquito bednets, antenatal medications, oral rehydration salts, zinc tablets, paracetamol, albendazole, methylated spirit, disinfectant, hand gloves and other items, to the hospital as part of activities marking the Maternal and Child Health Month of Rotary International.
The President, Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Eco, Dr. Anthony Ikpor, charged women to give priority attention to their health and that of their children.
Ikpor advised nursing mothers to sleep inside the mosquito bednets donated by the club, in order to reduce the prevalence of malaria infection in Nigeria, explaining that the immunity of babies and children are not as strong as that of adults, and as such they should be protected from diseases.
Also, the Chairman of the Maternal and Child Health Committee of the Club, Dr. Bieye Renner Briggs, gave an health talk on diarrhoea, malaria and the need for pregnant women to register for antenatal care and attend antenatal clinics to ensure positive pregnancy outcomes.
Briggs also lauded members of the club who made contributions towards the success of the intervention.
“My gratitude goes to the Board of Directors ably led by the President, Dr. Anthony Ikpor for the immense support and trust accorded to my committee. This intervention would not have been successful without the commitment and dedication of my committee members, I say a big thank you to you all.”
Receiving the Club, the Doctor in charge of the Health Centre, Dr. Sokeipirim Akoko, expressed his joy for the decision of the Club to pick his Health Centre for the intervention, assuring that the items donated will be judiciously used for the benefit of the patients of the community.
