14 August, Sweetcrude, Port Harcourt – The Rivers State Government has been called upon to intervene in the brewing disagreement between the Rumukurosi community in Obio/Akpor council and Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, over a General Memorandum of Understanding, so as to avert a breakdown of law and order in the area.
Disclosing the development in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Weekend, the elders, chiefs, opinion leaders and youths told the press that three out of the four sections of the area had been excluded from the implementation of the GMoU signed with the company.
Chairman of the community’s Town Council Comrade Ezebunwo Orianwo said the council was not in the mood for any crisis, explaining that it was against this notion that the council wants SPDC to make sure that that there was equity in the representation arrangement.
“There is need for the government to prevail on the oil company to ensure that all sections of the community are fully represented in the GMoU to avoid pitching the people against themselves as well as ensuring the stability of SPDC operation in the area”.
Also, leader of the youths Mr. Enwuruzuike Chime said the youths were currently agitated over the seeming “partiality in the implementation of the understanding”, stating, “what is going on amounts to arming sections and pitching them against themselves”.
Giving reasons for the shout out, he said, “we want to make it clear that such development does not augur well for peace and stability in the area because the continuous exclusion of the other families from what belongs to all will create bad blood”.
