27 August 2011, Sweetcrude, Lagos – Oil workers under the auspices of Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has called on the Federal Government to seek foreign assistance to curb spate of bomb attacks linked to the Boko Haram group in the country.
PENGASSAN President, Comrade Babatunde Ogun who reacted to the bombing of the United Nations’ Building in Abuja on Friday, said that with the current situation, “it seems the Nigerian security agencies are not able to halt terrorist attacks in the country.”
Ogun described as gruesome any act of terrorism. “It is now clear that security intelligence system in Nigeria has failed.”
According to him, “since all efforts at combating the crime rate, especially the act of terrorism by the Boko Haram group, have proved abortive, then we may have no other choice than to seek assistance from other countries that have the wherewithal to combat terrorism.
“The most important aspects where we need help are efficient intelligence gathering and vigilance, because if our security agencies are well equipped and knowledgeable in intelligence gathering, they would have stopped the act of carnage carried out by these criminals and group on innocent Nigeria.”
Ogun said that President Goodluck Jonathan should evolve the political will and determination to decisively deal with criminal groups, including Boko Haram, in the country.
