3 December 2011, Sweetcrude, LAGOS – One person was killed and nine cars damaged on Friday at the Ikosi end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway after a truck laden with petrol somersaulted after skidding off the expressway, resulting in a fire.

Reports said four rams were roasted and the nine cars burnt beyond recognition in the accident, blamed on overspeeding by the tanker driver.

The dead is believed to be a cattle rearer who allegedly had tried to save some of his rams.

“Around 5 pm, I saw the tanker driver speeding on the expressway. When he got to the part of the expressway facing Magodo Junction, he lost control, hit a Jeep before tumbling.

“Petrol began to pour out of the tanker and the driver, who was injured, jumped out of the vehicle and ran away,” an eye witness said.

The vehicle reportedly rammed into a makeshift mechanic workshop and a meat market before exploding.
