04 May 2012, Sweetcrude, LAGOS—Worried by the incessant gridlock along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos and determined to address the situation, Lagos State Government has issued a fresh four-day ultimatum to tanker and trailer drivers as well as owners of vehicles parked illegally along the axis to remove them from the road side or face the wrath of the law.
Governor Babatunde Fashola’s order got the backing of the Federal Government when a delegation from the Presidency visited the Governor on the matter.
The team from the Presidency led by the Special Adviser to the President on Performance and Evaluation and Chairman of the Ports Reform Committee, Professor Sylvester Monye, met with Fashola.
Prof. Monye declared in an interview that from today (Friday), all trucks parked along the Apapa-Oshodi road will be moved.
The presidential adviser, who spoke to State House Reporters at Lagos House, Ikeja, said: “It is going to be a total operation because from tomorrow we will deploy security to all the truck users. We have a substantial number of Policemen and women who would lead the operation.
“The operation is being supervised by the Inspector-General himself, so it is going to be a major operation and we are delighted that the Lagos State Government is totally with us on this assignment.”
Monye explained that the team came to the Governor to appraise him on the work of the Ports Reforms Committee and brief him on how the Committee intends to carry out the instructions of the President on clearing the mess at the Ports and the environs, particularly the access roads.
