23 May 2012, Sweetcrude, ABUJA – Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji and the chairman of Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Sam Amadi will next week appear before the House of Representatives next week to explain the reasons for the proposed hike in electricity tariff.

This is sequel to an order to that efect by the House in a resolution on Tuesday.

The motion was sponsored by Yacoob Balogun, (ACN/ Lagos), who called for immediate suspension of the planned tarriff hike, which NERC, the regulatory authority in charge of the electricity subsector, has already approved with effect from June.

Balogun argued: “Power generation and distribution has been very erratic and efforts to put it right have failed in the past and despite the declaration of emergency in the sector, regular power supply remains a mirage to Nigerians.”

He lamented delay in the distribution of the pre-paid meters to Nigerians as well as the “the systemic failure in the power sector”.

They will appear before the House committee on power headed by Patrick Ikhariale.
