21 December 2012, Sweetcrude, Abuja – Total has given a boost to the roll-back malaria scourge campaign in the country by sponsoring a four-day malaria control programme in Gwagwalada Area Council, one of the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory.
The program which held between the 11th and 14th December extended to communities in the council headquarters, Old Kutunku and Gwako and implemented by an international nongovernmental organisation, Family Care Association.
It included training the trainee to educate the populace on how to control and prevent malaria with special attention on women and children; provision of mosquito-treated nets and free testing and medication.
Campaign flyers capturing the messages in pidgin English were also distributed in the communities and to beneficiaries of the programme to extend their spread.
“Total places premium on its social responsibility to host communities and other stakeholders”, Dr. Justus Pearse, Total’s General Manager, Corprate Social Responsiblity explained.
Country Director of Family Care Association, Mr Joshua Kompeneer, said it was remarkable that Total extends its care to communities far outside its operational areas and commended the company for sponsoring the programme.
An appreciative Alhaji Zakari Dobi, the council chairman expressed gratitude to the company and solicited partnership with TEPNG on other schemes that will impact on residents of the council.
He was accompanied by various principal officers of the council and its legislature including the Vice Chairman Alhaji Abdulahi Saidu Zuba, the Speaker, Hon. Mohamed Yusuf Dobi, the Council Secretary, Alhaji Yahaya Usman and others.
The Family Care Association has successfully implemented Free Health care programmes for the company in its OML 58 host communities and has operated in the country for 17 years facilitating free health and education to various communities.
