09 March 2013, Sweetcrude, Lagos – The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo has disclosed Federal Government’s resolve to explore the abundant renewable energy sources like hydro, solar wind, coal, and bio-mass. in the country in 2013 to ensure the provision of electricity to the rural dwellers as well as reduce carbon emission.
The Minister stated this when some members of the German Parliament led by the German Ambassador to Nigeria Mrs. Dorothee Janetzke-Wenzel paid a courtesy visit to the Minister in his office in Abuja.
Prof. Nebo, who disclosed that Nigeria has abundance of both natural and human resources which are yet to be tapped optimally, lamented that the power situation in Nigeria is far below expectation and urged the German Government to assist the country in the area of power supply.
He further thanked the members of the parliament for their fact finding mission to Nigeria and urged them to take advantage of the nation’s huge investment opportunities, most especially in the power sector.
Also, the Minister of State for Power, Hajiya Zainab Ibrahim Kuchi stated that government has done a lot of feasibility studies on mini-hydro power in the country and as such needs private investors to implement the projects.
Mrs. Kuchi further emphasized the need of using waste to energy as this would help provide electricity as well as clean-up the environment.
Earlier, the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Mrs. Dorothee Janetzke-Wenzel said the members of the parliament are in Nigeria for a fact finding mission and to ascertain the power sector situation in the country with a view to finding out the area to invest in.
The members of the parliament said the German Government is very interested in the positive development of Nigeria, and electricity is catalyst to the development of any country.
