22 April 2014, News Wires – Two people have been killed at the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea, with two more injured.
According to local media reports, the first started at 4pm local time at one of the docks used to construct liquefied petroleum gas carriers.
The dock workers were caught up in the blaze that was extinguished an hour and a half later.
HHI was building an 84,000-tonne carrier that was due to be finished next month.
The fire department sent about 18 trucks and 60 firefighters to extinguish the flames, which spewed plumes of black smoke into the sky.
People living nearby were forced to evacuate.
One of the workers was found dead at the scene. Another was taken to hospital where he died from serious burns.
All four victims were employees of Hyundai’s subcontractors.
The official cause of the fire has not yet been revealed, but there is suspicion that it started when workers were welding heat insulation materials or nearby parts.
