14 October 2014, Lagos – As part of activities marking the 2014 Energy Conservation Month, the Lagos State Government has embarked on a community sensitisation road show to educate people on how to conserve energy.
The programme is being executed through its implementing agency, the Lagos State Electricity Board, LSEB.Speaking at a road show in Ajah, Lagos, LSEB representative, Mr. Adedeji Akolade, said: “the Energy Conservation Month initiative was launched last year as a Behavioural Change Campaign to instill the habit of efficient use of electric power in the residents.
The campaign dubbed, ‘Conserve Energy, Save Money’, CESM, runs throughout the 31 days in the month during which the key messages of the benefits of efficient use of available power are espoused to the residents.
“Like we are doing here today, our personnel would move round Lagos to educate residents that conserving energy is saving money. And we are going to demonstrate this to them practically using the Lagos Energy calculator to show how much they can save by conserving energy,” he said.
Akolade added that the road show would move across five select regions in the state namely, Ikorodu, Badagry, Epe, Eti-Osa, and Oshodi to enable more residents to be well informed about the benefits of energy conservation.
A participant at the road show and a prize winner, Mr Ganiu Mabifa, said the energy conservation campaign is a welcome development at this point in time when the country needed more electricity power to develop the small and medium scale enterprises, SMEs. “If other states can invest in a campaign like this it will really help the nation as the value chain benefits are enormous”, he said.
Another participant, Mr. Gbenga Akeju, expressed delight in the campaign. “I never thought it is important to conserve energy until now that the Lagos State team has educated me on its importance. I’ll definitely take this message home to my wife and kids and ensure that we switch off all our appliances that are not in use,” he said.
Encouraging Lagosians to take energy conservation seriously, Akolade noted that in addition to helping them save money, conservation also preserves energy for future use as well as protects the environment.
He enjoined all energetic Lagosians to be part of the energy conservation culture by being involved through the online media via the Hash Tag ‘Are You In Or Out’.
He also appealed to the residents to watch out for the robust conversations on Twitter, follow the movement and become an ‘INsider’.Recall that the Lagos State Government had successfully launched three Independent Power Plants, IPPs, in the past four years. All the power plants run on natural gas thereby reducing carbon emissions and promoting a safer and cleaner environment.
