10 November 2014, Yenagoa — Chairman of the Swamp Area Oil And Gas Producing Communities in Bayelsa State, High Chief Victor Igbaba, has accused politicians and some security agencies of complicity in oil bunkering and piracy along the creeks of the Niger Delta.
In an interview at the weekend, Chief Igbaba called on government and oil companies to integrate the locals into the war against oil theft and other criminal activities along the creeks since they understand the terrain better than the security agents being posted to the area.
He said: “We are saying no to oil theft, pipeline vandals, illegal refineries, piracy and other criminal activities along the water ways. Most of our politicians and security agencies are part of these illegal businesses.”
He criticised the award of contracts for security surveillance on pipelines, oil wells and other related issues pertaining to oil to those who lack the understanding of the creeks.
